8 Questions to Ask a Private Security Company
Asking these questions will allow the potential security company to show you what they’ve got.
You need to know what you are looking for, and what answers will let you know that this specific company is the right fit.
Since you may not know this information on your own, we have compiled it for you in one place, so that you can know exactly what you need to ask, and what answers you want.
1. Are you licensed?
Licensing ensures that the people who work for the private security company have undergone thorough screening before being hired.
In addition, licensing requires documentation of any employees, which includes fingerprinting and criminal background checks.
By asking the candidate whether they are licensed, you are guaranteeing your safety. That license lets you know that the company is legitimate, that its employees are reliable, and that you will be safe.
2. Are you insured?
Insurance is something you want in any company you’re working with, but especially when that company is someone you are hiring to protect you.
The private security company you’re looking to hire should carry at least:
- General liability
- Business insurance
- Workers compensation
If they have more, great. Just be sure the bare minimum above is in place. This guarantees you are covered, should anything go wrong. One million dollars is the industry standard for an insurance policy.
Also, you’ll want to ask the security company to add your business as someone additional they are insuring.
3. Do you have any references?
You want to hire a private security company that can provide you with references from previous or current clients, or other people that can speak to their abilities.
From other clients you’ll want to know a few things:
- What services they’re receiving
- What their experience has been like
- Pros to this particular company
- Cons to them
- Whether they would recommend this company to someone else
Learning about the company via someone who has worked with them first-hand is one of the best ways to find out how they really operate.
4. How long have you been operating?
The longer a company has been established, the more time they have had to build up their experience, as well as their reputation.
Additionally, a private security company who has been around for a while has had the time to establish contacts, including local authorities. This proves to be incredibly beneficial. Along with this comes the knowledge of local crime, which allows the company to properly plan security.
5. How do you train your employees?
The training that a private security company forces their employees to undergo says a lot about the company.
Sure, reading books and learning about private security in a classroom is great. But it is not enough to actually be able to put that knowledge into practice in the real world.
You want a company whose guards are also hands-on trained in a number of areas including:
● Risk assessment
● Risk management
● Event security
● Threat assessment
● Threat management
● Public interaction
● Public security
● Travel security
● And more
With thorough training under their belts, you know that the security company you hired to watching over you will be able to handle any situation that comes their way.
What’s the point of hiring a security company that may not be able to help you deal with a challenging and dangerous situation?
6. Do you monitor your guards?
If the company does not keep track of their guards who are on duty during off-hours, that is a red flag.
A promising private security company should have a system where the guards are in contact with management to ensure the service is always top-notch, even during night and weekend hours.
The company you hire should know where its people are at all times when on duty, so if something goes wrong, help can be on the way.
This is also a great way to ensure that the guards remain dedicated to their work. If they know they are being monitored, they are more likely to do their job well.
7. How do you incorporate technology into your work?
Technology is integral to providing security for you. There are many ways that a potential attack could happen virally, so hiring a private security company that is well-versed in technology is a must.
Additionally, technology ensures that systems for the company work more smoothly, so your risk is minimized at all times. It is their job to keep your personal information secure, as well as have GPS, tools to report incidents, and other support that can only come from the incorporation of technology.
8. What are your prices?
While all the above questions are important for your safety, this question is important for your wallet.
You need to find out what the private security company will charge to provide you with the services you need.
Ask for a quote, and pay attention to how they respond.
If their quote is much lower than other companies you’re looking into, watch out. This likely means that they may not be hiring the best employees, or that they may not be fully insured. They are probably cutting corners somewhere.
On the other hand, if their quote is much higher than other companies, they may be tricking you into thinking their services are superior, when they, in fact, may not be.
Though the price is, of course, an important question to ask, it should not be the main determining factor in which private security company you choose.
When it comes down to it, you should choose your security based on experience, services, and quality.
